Chaos Head, Chäos;HEAd, the anime series was developed off of both the video game and graphic novel by 5pb, a small Japanese company. The series revolves around Takumi Nishijō who is a paranoid, delusional, and schizophrenic hikkikomori who lives alone in his “base” away from society. Takumi is only interested in 2D, video games and anime, and resents anything 3D, the real world.
Takumi’s life is turned upside as he is dragged into a series of murder cases in which he becomes a suspect of. He becomes unable to tell the difference between what is real and what his deluding. It doesn’t take long for the series to become confusing as Takumi is absorbed into his world of insanity. At first glance the series really reminded me a lot of Welcome to the NHK. It has your typical NEET, Not Employed or in Education or Training, type character who cannot tell the difference between reality and his made up world. I kept waiting for a girl to show up and start saving him, but unlike NHK the series takes another turn by taking the typical anime girl personas and adding them into this chaotic world.
The series does an excellent job of constantly making you guess what is going on and really keeps it entertaining watching Takumi completely freaking out and running towards his anime figurine collection hoping that his idol Seira, a made up anime character, will come and save him. Overall the series is very well done. The soundtrack is enjoyable, while not the most memorable, does add a sense of enjoyment to the series. As stated before most of the characters are stereotypical anime girls and while the series fails to go too deep into the plot, for a 12 episode series, they do a very good job for what they did explain. Though as with most series, the ending did seem a bit rushed and thrown together, but that is common for most series of this genre.
Chaos Head is definitely a series worth watching. I give it an A- rating, only because it could have gone a bit further into the plot.
