Synopsis
A monster appears out of nowhere during the industrial revolution and starts spreading a horrible virus amongst the humans with just a single bite. The infected humans turn into "Kabane". The Kabane are zombie like creatures that are very hard to kill. The infection insulates the heart with an almost impenetrable layer of iron. On the island Hinomoto, people have built fortress-like stations to shelter themselves from the infected. People access these stations and transport wares between them with the help of Hayajiro, armored locomotives running on steam. One night a Hayajiro was under the control of the Kabane and it crashes into Aragane station. The station is in sheer panic as the Kabane attack the city. A young engineer called Ikoma uses this opportunity to test a new anti-Kabane weapon that he's been working on called the piercing gun. It works perfectly, but then he gets bit!
