Which do you prefer?
Subbed
Dubbed
Raw

I personally prefer subbed because dubs are often poorly done. However, if I'm watching a series for a second time I'll normally give the dub a chance. Of course I wish I could watch raw!

I also wish I could watch raw. I watch dubbed when I sort of want to watch the series quickly or without thinking much, because subbed anime obviously gets me reading all the time, plus I have to keep looking at the bottom of my screen while trying to pay attention to the animation. So, if I want my brain to relax i'll choose dub, lol. But subbed is better in my opinion. =]

I prefer to watch an Anime subbed because I can hear the emotion in the voices of the characters unlike in English Dubbed. Also I pick up on certain Japanese phrases and words which I feel is cool since I love Japan's culture. One day when I learn Japanese if I ever that is I will watch it Raw!!!

I agree with Awsome! English voice actors just don't get the emotions right.

Subbed all the way! I can't stand dubbed (cuz it's usually poorly done like WestNyorai said).
The only anime I can stomach dubbed is DBZ or Cowboy Bebop.

Watching subbed is also a good way for me to keep practicing my Japanese and that's always a good thing!

What about Outlaw Star? :p

Ah you're right...I forgot about that one

Yes I can handle OS dubbed too

NeNe's right. It really just depends on the voice actors. Japanese voice actors/actresses are likely paid quite a bit more than American voice actors/actresses. And they're more of a celebrity than they are in the US. So until that balances out more, I doubt we'll be able to have the same overall performance in most dubbed anime than we do in majority of subbed anime.

Then again, it's always funny to hear Steve Blum try to sell me car insurance.

Especially going into a profession like voice acting, it's about the passion. If it's true that English voice actors aren't giving their all because of money, then why did they even choose this profession?

In general they thought it was good idea. Plus they may not like Anime and are just doing it to make a quick buck. I feel a lot of Anime deserve better dubs. It's a good thing I prefer subbed my self since I actually get some emotion in the voice of the characters.

I wonder what the average age of American voice actors/actresses is. It would tell a lot as to what their reasoning is. If they're around 35ish, maybe they actually wanted to be film or theater performers, couldn't make it, did a little voice acting, then found either the money was good or the work was fun.

Then again I do agree with Complex. There should be passion in it. When providing a service which people look forward to or need you have to have some degree of passion. Specially when it comes to entertainment.

But mainly I just think that because there is no real... Celebrity status, open door for everyone to make a good income, difficulty in knowing where to start and likely the competitive difference between 2000 - 2009 and 1990 to 1999's... It'll prolly be a while until the quality of dubs matches the quality of subs. I mean, it's a completely different lifestyle between Japan and America.

Of course people should love their profession. But with the economy few people can land jobs they want sadly. This also effects a the Entertainment Field. Well not much can be done since people also lose their passions sometimes as well.

I think there is a certain level of celebrity status with voice actors though. I know for sure there are avid fans who know exactly who the voice actors are for their favorite chars lol.

Of course it's not on the level of Angelina Jolie or something but still...fans recognize a good voice actor/actress and will support them.

It is true. In America we don't have the national awareness of anime that asia as a whole does. And we likely won't anytime soon. I know I'm not alone when you still run into people who have not even heard of anime Japanese cartoons. Then again because of my job most of the people I meet are much older, but still. With every generation the number will likely increase. Even if you look at Nickelodeon or afternoon cartoons, anime is being shown more and more. Yes, they aren't the best shows, but it is still being broadcasted. Eventually those kids will likely grow up and dive deeper into it. I really see the next generation of anime and voice actors as a huge leap from my generation.

I'm a little nervous about that. Most people find Anime in not the best way possible. And may not dig deeper. And there will be people against it of course. A lot of people never seen an Anime but still mock it like it is just Tentacle Porn. And then there are people who only stick to main stream Anime and never move farther.

Yea I agree with you Awsome...I keep running into people claiming they love anime but they can't seem to name a title other than One Piece, Bleach, or Naruto.

I'd at least have more respect for them if they said DBZ..sigh

That is one stigma anime as a whole will likely never move past. If hate can exist in something like....

"I hate football. Football has no contact. Football is for wussies. I love American football."

"I hate American football. American football players wear pads. Wearing pads is for wussies. I love rugby."

"I hate rugby. Rugby is a sport for neanderthals. Neanderthals are for wussies. I love mathematics."

And so forth and so forth. It'd be nice if that could easily be abolished. But, it is nice to want things right?

Yes it is nice to want things. But to get this abolished it will take a huge group effort and that does not seem like it will happen.

That's how revolutionists are born!

How else would Germany had tried to succeed in creating a worl- How else would Russia had almost succeeded in finding an equal opp- How else would Mesopotamia had spread their influence and technol- How else would have the French gained their wealt- How else woul---

Interruption. I guess it needs to start somewhere. Could always make witty shirts which express the point. Like, an Octopus holding up a sign that says, "I don't even like hentai."

I'd buy one.

I saw it as part of a meme a long time ago. So I honestly have no idea who would be owner of the phrase. Then again you could always alter the idea. A squid, or change the phrase.
